Discover how the Healing Gap Framework transforms your approach to wellness by helping you identify where you are, define where you want to be, understand barriers, and take practical action.

Introduction

What if your approach to wellness changed completely when you stopped asking only, “What is wrong with me?” and started asking, “What is the gap between where I am and where I want to be?”

This simple shift can change how you think about your health.

Many people approach wellness reactively. Something hurts, energy declines, sleep becomes difficult, weight changes, digestion becomes uncomfortable, or a health concern develops—and the immediate question becomes:

“What can I take to make this problem go away?”

There is nothing wrong with seeking appropriate treatment when you are unwell. Modern healthcare plays an essential role in diagnosing, treating, and managing disease.

But wellness can involve more than responding to problems after they appear.

It can also involve understanding your current state, identifying the factors that may be contributing to the gap between your present condition and your desired state, and taking practical steps to cultivate healthier conditions.

This is where the Healing Gap Framework offers a different way of thinking.

Instead of seeing wellness as a collection of isolated symptoms, the framework encourages you to look at the bigger picture.

Where are you now?

Where do you want to be?

What is standing between those two points?

What can you do about it?

These questions can transform wellness from something that happens to you into something you actively participate in.

What Is the Healing Gap?

The Healing Gap is the space between your current state and your desired state.

Imagine someone who says:

“I want to have more energy.”

Their current state may be low energy, irregular sleep, poor dietary habits, inactivity, and high stress.

Their desired state may be waking refreshed, having more stable energy throughout the day, and being physically active.

The space between these two states is the gap.

The next step is not simply to complain about the gap.

It is to understand it.

What factors are contributing to it?

What habits are maintaining it?

What barriers are preventing change?

What actions can begin closing it?

This creates a more constructive approach to wellness.

The Seven Steps of the Healing Gap Framework

The Healing Gap Framework can be understood as a practical journey:

Current State → Desired State → Gap → Barriers → Action Steps → Progress → Freedom Day

Each stage provides an opportunity to understand yourself better and make more informed decisions.

1. Understand Your Current State

The first step is awareness.

You cannot effectively change what you have not examined.

Your current state includes more than a diagnosis or a symptom.

It can include:

• Nutrition
• Hydration
• Movement
• Sleep
• Stress
• Emotional wellbeing
• Digestion
• Environment
• Relationships
• Purpose
• Daily routines
• Existing healthcare needs

Ask yourself:

“What is happening in my life right now?”

Be honest without becoming judgmental.

Your current state is not your identity.

It is your starting point.

If you say, “I am unhealthy,” you may unconsciously turn a temporary condition into a permanent identity.

Instead, consider:

“This is my current state, and I can examine what influences it.”

That creates room for action.

2. Define Your Desired State

After understanding where you are, define where you want to go.

What does wellness mean to you?

Your desired state might involve:

• Better physical fitness
• More consistent sleep
• Improved nutrition
• Greater mobility
• More energy
• Better stress management
• Improved emotional wellbeing
• Healthier relationships
• Greater sense of purpose
• Better management of an existing condition

Your desired state should be meaningful and realistic.

Don’t create a wellness goal simply because someone else has one.

Ask:

“What would meaningful improvement look like for me?”

Then write it down.

A vague goal such as “I want to be healthier” is difficult to act upon.

A clearer goal might be:

“I want to become physically active five days a week and develop a consistent sleep routine.”

Clarity creates direction.

3. Identify Your Healing Gap

Now compare your current state with your desired state.

This is where the Healing Gap becomes visible.

For example:

Current State

I rarely exercise and spend most of my day sitting.

Desired State

I want to become physically active and improve my fitness.

Healing Gap

I need a consistent movement routine that fits my lifestyle.

The gap is not a reason for shame.

It is a map.

Once you can see the gap, you can begin asking what is required to close it.

4. Identify the Barriers

Knowing what you want is not always enough.

People often know what they should do but struggle to do it consistently.

Why?

Because barriers exist.

Your barriers may include:

• Lack of time
• Lack of knowledge
• Financial limitations
• Unsupportive environments
• Stress
• Poor planning
• Unhelpful habits
• Fear
• Low motivation
• Physical limitations
• Conflicting responsibilities
• Lack of accountability

Suppose your goal is to exercise every morning.

Your barrier might be going to bed too late.

The solution may therefore not be “try harder to exercise.”

The solution may begin with:

Create an earlier bedtime.

This is why the Healing Gap approach looks beneath the surface.

Sometimes the obstacle to one behavior exists somewhere else in your lifestyle.

The Difference Between Symptoms and Systems

A symptom is something you experience.

A system is a pattern that influences what happens repeatedly.

For example, feeling tired may be the immediate experience.

But your broader lifestyle may include:

• Irregular sleep
• High stress
• Poor dietary patterns
• Physical inactivity
• Inadequate recovery

This does not mean every symptom has a lifestyle cause.

Medical conditions can have many causes, and symptoms should not be self-diagnosed.

However, examining your lifestyle systems can sometimes reveal areas where improvement is appropriate.

This is one reason the Healing Gap approach asks broader questions.

5. Create Practical Action Steps

Once you understand the gap and barriers, turn insight into action.

This is where wellness becomes practical.

Don’t create a plan containing 25 major lifestyle changes.

Start with a few meaningful actions.

For example:

Goal: Improve physical activity.

Action: Walk for 20 minutes after dinner four days a week.

Goal: Improve sleep.

Action: Establish a consistent bedtime and reduce stimulating activities before bed.

Goal: Improve nutrition.

Action: Add more vegetables and minimally processed foods to regular meals.

Goal: Manage stress.

Action: Spend ten minutes each evening in quiet reflection, breathing, prayer, or journaling.

Small actions can become powerful when repeated.

6. Measure Progress

You cannot improve a system effectively if you never review it.

Progress does not always happen in a straight line.

There may be good days and difficult days.

There may be weeks when you follow your plan consistently and other periods when life disrupts your routine.

That does not mean the journey has failed.

Measure progress over time.

Ask:

• What has improved?
• What remains difficult?
• Which habits are becoming easier?
• What barriers have appeared?
• What needs to change?
• What have I learned?

The purpose of measurement is not punishment.

It is feedback.

Baseline Day and Freedom Day

Two important concepts can make the Healing Gap journey more meaningful.

Baseline Day

Your Baseline Day is the point at which you honestly assess where you are.

You document your current habits, routines, challenges, and goals.

It becomes your reference point.

Freedom Day

Your Freedom Day represents a meaningful milestone in your journey.

It may be the day you recognize that a significant gap has been reduced or that a healthier way of living has become established.

Freedom Day does not mean that you will never experience another health challenge.

Rather, it symbolizes progress, greater awareness, and increased ownership of your wellness journey.

The Eight Body Garden Pillars and the Healing Gap

The Healing Gap Framework works naturally with the Eight Body Garden Pillars.

These pillars provide areas where you can examine your current state and identify opportunities for improvement.

Nutrition

Ask:

“What is my current relationship with food?”

Then compare it with your desired state.

Your action might involve improving meal quality, increasing dietary variety, or reducing excessive consumption of highly processed foods.

Hydration

Ask:

“Am I maintaining appropriate hydration for my circumstances?”

Identify practical habits that make regular hydration easier.

Movement

Ask:

“How much movement does my current lifestyle contain?”

Then create a realistic movement goal based on your current abilities.

Sleep and Rest

Ask:

“Does my lifestyle protect adequate sleep and recovery?”

Look at your bedtime, sleep environment, routines, and sources of disruption.

Stress and Emotional Wellness

Ask:

“What consistently increases my stress, and what helps me recover?”

Then build healthy stress-management practices into your routine.

Digestion and Microbiome

Ask:

“What habits support my digestive wellbeing?”

Focus on nutritious food patterns, hydration, regular movement, and appropriate medical attention when symptoms persist.

Environment and Detoxification

Ask:

“Does my environment support the way I want to live?”

Look at practical issues such as smoke exposure, food safety, sanitation, household chemicals, air quality, and other environmental factors.

Purpose, Relationships and Spiritual Wellbeing

Ask:

“What gives my life meaning?”

Consider your relationships, contribution, values, faith, purpose, and connection with others.

The Healing Gap Changes the Question

Traditional symptom-focused thinking may ask:

“How do I get rid of this symptom?”

The Healing Gap approach adds another layer:

“What is happening in my life, and what can I learn from this situation?”

Again, symptoms should not automatically be interpreted as lifestyle messages. Some symptoms require prompt medical assessment.

But your health experience can still become an opportunity to examine your habits and overall wellbeing.

This encourages curiosity rather than fear.

You Are the Driver of Your Wellness Journey

One of the central principles of the Healing Gap approach is personal responsibility.

You are the driver.

This does not mean you are responsible for every health condition that happens to you.

Genetics, infections, accidents, socioeconomic conditions, environmental exposures, aging, and many other factors can influence health.

Personal responsibility means recognizing the areas where you do have influence.

You may not control everything.

But you can often influence some of your:

• Daily habits
• Food choices
• Activity
• Sleep routines
• Stress-management practices
• Relationships
• Learning
• Environment
• Healthcare decisions
• Willingness to seek appropriate professional help

The goal is not blame.

The goal is agency.

From Passive Patient to Active Participant

The Healing Gap approach encourages you to become an active participant in your wellness.

That means asking better questions.

Instead of:

“What should someone do for me?”

also ask:

“What can I learn?”

Instead of:

“What is the quickest solution?”

also ask:

“What sustainable habits can support my wellbeing?”

Instead of:

“Why can’t I change?”

ask:

“What barrier is making change difficult?”

Instead of:

“I failed.”

ask:

“What did this experience teach me?”

These questions can change your relationship with personal growth.

The VTFAR Connection

The Healing Gap can also connect with the VTFAR principle: Vision → Thoughts → Feelings → Actions → Results.

It begins with a vision.

Your vision influences the way you think.

Your thoughts influence how you feel.

Your feelings can influence your actions.

Your repeated actions contribute to your results.

This is not a guarantee that positive thinking alone will produce health outcomes. Biology and circumstances are complex.

Rather, it is a framework for understanding how mindset and behavior can interact.

If your vision is clear, your actions can become more intentional.

Build Your Personal Healing Gap Plan

Take a notebook and write these seven questions:

1. Where am I now?

Describe your current state honestly.

2. Where do I want to be?

Define your desired state.

3. What is my gap?

Identify the difference between the two.

4. What barriers are in the way?

Identify the factors that may make change difficult.

5. What actions can I take?

Choose specific, realistic steps.

6. How will I measure progress?

Choose meaningful indicators.

7. What will my Freedom Day represent?

Define the milestone you want to celebrate.

This becomes your personal Healing Gap roadmap.

Wellness Is a Journey of Cultivation

The Healing Gap Framework fits naturally with the Body Garden philosophy.

A garden does not become healthy because the gardener performs one dramatic action.

It improves through cultivation.

The soil is prepared.

Seeds are planted.

Water is provided.

Weeds are managed.

Plants receive appropriate light.

Growth is observed.

Adjustments are made.

The same principle can apply to personal wellness.

You cultivate.

You observe.

You learn.

You adjust.

You continue.

Final Thoughts: Close the Gap One Step at a Time

Wellness does not have to begin with a dramatic transformation.

It can begin with a question.

Where am I today?

Then another:

Where do I want to be?

And another:

What is standing between these two points?

The answers reveal your Healing Gap.

Once you understand the gap, you can identify barriers, choose practical actions, measure progress, and continue adjusting your approach.

You do not have to change your entire life in one day.

Start with one gap.

Choose one action.

Repeat it.

Learn from it.

Then take the next step.

Your body is your garden.

Your habits are the seeds.

Your environment is the soil.

Your actions are the cultivation.

And your wellness journey is the garden you cultivate over time.

Don’t simply wait for wellness to happen. Learn how to cultivate the conditions that support it.

Find your gap. Understand your barriers. Take your next step.

Your journey toward greater wellness starts now.
